Dr. Pickering brings both restorative dentistry experience and periodontal/implant training to Peninsula Periodontal Associates. He graduated first in his dental school class at UCSF School of Dentistry in 1977. He maintained a private general and restorative dental practice in Belmont, California for 20 years.
During this time he taught in the division of restorative dentistry at UCSF for 15 years, and achieved associate clinical professor status. In 1996, Dr. Pickering returned to school to further his dental education as a resident in the periodontal/implant graduate residency program at the University of Washington in Seattle. He completed his residency program and master’s research in 1999, and has been with Peninsula Periodontal Associates since then.
Dr. Pickering retains a teaching affiliation at the University of Washington, and lectures nationally and internationally on periodontics and implant dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, an achievement earned through written and oral examinations above and beyond becoming a periodontist.
He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, Academy of Osseointegration, and American and California Dental Associations, and has been elected to the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Pickering is also a past president of the San Mateo County Dental Society, past trustee of the California Dental Association, and past delegate to the House of the American Dental Association. He currently serves as director of the California Society of Periodontists, and is involved nationally on committees of the American Academy of Periodontology. He is proud of his affiliation with the Society for Comprehensive and Progressive Periodontics, which is made up of exceptional periodontists from around the country.
Dr. Pickering is extremely proud of his three grown daughters. He enjoys being a grandfather, spending quality time with his wife Janice, puttering around the backyard, playing guitar, singing, drawing, playing golf, lecturing, and of course being a part of Peninsula Periodontal Associates.
